“Show me,” Buzz said when they pulled up.

“Dude, you don’t need to waste your time,” I informed him.

“You have no idea how strong these—”

“He was dead. I touched his hand. He was completely buried by mud and rocks,” Kim told Buzz.

Buzz’s gaze drifted to the weapon. “You’re kidding me.”

“Nope. Alien tech. Pretty cool, huh?” Kim passed it to him.

Buzz grinned, and he looked like a different man. “This might be a game changer.”

“If we can find the others,” I suggested.

Bones was with Sheriff Parker. “Do you have a name?”

“I do not recall,” the Sphere said.

“Of course you don’t.” Buzz pushed something on the gun, and the tip began to glow yellow.

“What about my sister? Can you sense the other Spheres?”

He shook his head. “Not currently. I believe there might be a way, but I can’t remember.”

“Do you know why you came to Bell Island?” Kim asked.

“No.”

“What do you know?” Bones quipped.

“That we are in danger,” Parker said.

“Talk about stating the obvious,” I muttered. “Buzz, what did you find?”

“That mob, the one with Mr. Bellows, your neighbor. They were…” Bones rubbed his forehead.

“The Traveler killed them all. Near the theater.” Buzz turned the gun off. “I spotted him behind the tire shop.”

“That’s the same spot where the Sphere took Cindy over,” Kim said.

“I thought so.” Buzz looked at the sky. “There’s a third Sphere on Bell Island, with two aliens hunting them. We have something that might actually kill them now, and one of the Spheres with us. We’re in a better position than before. But we must gather the others.”

“To lure them into your trap,” I finished.

“That’s right.”

I turned my attention on Parker. “Do you know the man you’ve taken over?”

“Yes. I have his memories.”

“If you were planning on hiding, where would you go?”

“Why is that relevant?” Buzz interjected.

“Just answer it,” I pushed.

“Sheriff Parker has a safe room in his house. I would go there,” he said.

I tried to think where Cindy might hide, and it became abundantly clear. “The school.”

“School?” Bones asked.

“Cindy used to seclude herself in the slide when she was young. You know, the big twisty plastic one that always smelled funny on a hot day?”

“I remember that. You had to bribe her to leave it,” he said.

Buzz opened the rear door. “Everyone in. We’re going to the school.”

“Where are the deputy and Reaper?” Kim asked from the middle seat.

“He stuck around. Said he couldn’t leave such a dreadful crime scene.” Bones rolled his window down when Buzz started to drive.

It was finally after midnight, so the fourth of July had now become the fifth, a day usually reserved for the entire adult population to recover from too many drinks. The kids all had gut aches from too many hot dogs and soda pops.

Even though we’d gained a slight advantage in the mines, reality was creeping past my borders. There were still two of the giant monsters terrorizing Bell Island, and my little sister had been invaded by a sphere of light.

I glanced at Parker, who stared blankly, hands on his lap.
